Acis and Galatea

Eboracum Baroque are delighted to return to the idyllic surroundings of The Orchard Tea Garden in Grantchester for a series of baroque concerts. They conclude their concerts with a performance of Handel’s pastoral opera, Acis and Galatea. These concerts are generously sponsored by Woodfines Solicitors, without whom these concerts would not be possible.

It tells the story of the shepherd Acis, and his love for the nymph Galatea. The couple’s delight is interrupted by the jealous giant Polyphemus, who flies into a drunken rage, brutally beating Acis to death. The opera concludes with Galatea transforming Acis’s body into a beautiful stream, thus immortalising him in nature. Eboracum Baroque will perform with a small orchestra performing on period instruments, soloists and chorus.

Acis – Gareth Edmunds

Galatea – Elen Lloyd Roberts

Polyphemus – Jamie Woollard

Damon – James Micklethwaite

Coridon – Tamsin Raitt

Conductor – Chris Parsons

The Orchard Tea Garden will be serving refreshments before the performances and during the interval. Please bring your own seating if you wish but the famous green deck chairs will be out!
