Eboracum Baroque are delighted to return to the atmospheric Lady Chapel at Glastonbury Abbey to perform The Tempest, Purcell’s musical take on the Shakespeare play full of magic, betrayal and revenge. Purcell’s music includes choruses and songs for evil spirits and stormy instrumental dances depicting the powers of Prospero conjuring up a storm to shipwreck his enemies. It also features the airy spirit, Ariel and songs for the gods of the sea and wind, Neptune and Aeolus.
In the first half of this performance hear Purcell’s music to ‘Bonduca’ the tale of one of Britain’s most notorious tribal queens, Boudicca and her downfall at the hands of her Roman enemies. It includes rallying war like choruses sung by the British as they charge against the invaders, songs praying to the British gods for success in battle and concludes with the defeat of Boudicca and her forces.
