In early December an audience of 100 attended in our Georgian church for a magical candlelight performance by Eboracum Baroque, of George Frideric Handel’s sublime Messiah. Normally, one expects a full orchestra, choir and soloists’. On this occasion the orchestra consisted of a violin, cello, chamber organ and two natural trumpets. The singers comprised of 2 sopranos, a contralto, tenor and a bass. A thrilling sound filled the church. It was a very complete and moving performance with the 5 singers, singing the arias and choruses, accompanied by the baroque instruments. The Hallelujah chorus and trumpets was totally exhilarating, all the audience standing and the church was filled with the sound of ‘Glory to God’. The clapping went on and on, finally we served mulled wine to the performers and audience, everyone went home knowing they had experienced a very special performance.
