Eboracum Baroque are very excited to perform a programme of Venetian music including Vivaldi’s famous Gloria with the girls choirs of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge and St Mary’s School, Cambridge in a unique performance in Clare College Chapel, Cambridge.
It is highly likely that this work was originally performed in Venice at the Ospedale della Pieta, a girls orphanage where Vivaldi was employed and for whom he wrote a great deal of choral and instrumental music. It has become a choral favourite today with it’s rousing opening chorus instantly recognisable and beautiful arias contrasting with Vivaldi’s usual fiery nature found elsewhere in the piece. We present this work with just upper voices creating a performance not too dissimilar to one of the first in Venice.
Also included in the programme is Vivaldi’s motet, Nulla in Mundo Pax sung by the soprano, Lottie Bowden and instrumental Venetian music by Vivaldi and Albinoni.
